Today more than 600 students gathered at Tehran University to protest against the Islamic regime of Iran. This follows a planned month of protest actions by the students against the massacre of students a few years ago and to free the jailed students and political prisoners.
Early today and yesterday, in anticipation of students’ protest, the Iranian authorities arrested several students from their houses in Tehran and other cities, barricaded the University and the surrounding streets with their military force. Despite this attempt, the students succeeded to carry out their demonstration today. There were speeches made and slogans chanted.
The regime knows nothing but suppression, arrests, imprisonment and torture to quell protests and remain in power. No matter what the Iranian authorities do, the students have shown that they are determined to carry out their protests. The stakes are high. So are the demands. These were the slogans chanted in the streets of Tehran and other cities in Iran today:
“Students’ movement supports workers’ movement”; “Students’ movement united with women’s and workers’ movement”; “No to war”; “We are against any foreign intervention”; “Students, students, support, support”; “Students die, but do not accept humiliation”; “Down with dictatorship”; and “Freedom, Equality, Boycott elections”.
The number of students arrested in many cities of Iran are increasing. The authorities both in civilian clothes and military gear have stormed into students’ homes or in the streets and arrested them. The names of some of the jailed students are:
Nasim Soltan Beygi, Ali Salem, Mohsen Sagafi, Mohsen Ghamin, Keyvan Amiri Elyasi, Babak Yasha Javid, Abed Tavancheh, Hossein Babayee, Roozbeh Faghihi, Karim Asayesh, Roozbehan Amiri, Saeed Haibi, Elnaz Jamshidi, Anoosheh Azadfar, Ehsan Azadfar, Mehdi Graylo, Nader Ahsani, Milad Moyeeni, Arash Pakzad, Hasan Moarefi, Behrang Zandi ……
All political prisoners must be freed now. There is a battle going on in Iran between forces of freedom and reaction. Let’s support freedom. That is the way forward!
